Hello, and welcome to SPMS Band!
In 6th grade, students spend the first two weeks of school learning about reading music and deciding which instrument they will play. Once instruments are selected, we will acquire the actual instrument for every student. Then we will have a "Fast Start" camp. Students are responsible for having an instrument at Fast Start. Students will come to school on a Saturday and work with a professional on their individual instrument. We close with a pizza party. Then we buckle down and practice all year to learn the instruments. There will be a Concert in December and a Concert in May. Students will be prepared to perform on the field trip concerts in 7th and 8th grade. |
6th Grade Band Fees:
$20 polo shirt--required for performances (same shirt 6-8) $10 Fast Start--required, pays for instructors and pizza $10 t-shirt--optional, just a fun band spirit shirt (additional tees available for parents to purchase) ======================== $40 total for the year |

Are you unsure about band? Check out the videos tab on the Be Part of the Band Website! There are videos explaining how all the instruments sound. They are played by other students who are in middle or high school.
There are also some interviews with students AND parents talking about their personal experience with band.
If you still have questions, feel free to contact Mr. Ragan on the director page of this website.

A note about instrument purchase:
Ideally, every student will own their own instrument. There are some exceptions, larger instruments like tuba, euphonium, bass clarinet, and french horn are often provided by the school.
Instruments can be purchased at a music store new or used, or there many individuals are out there selling their instrument used online or in person. The most important factor is quality of the instrument. There are cheap copies all over the internet, but as soon as something bends or breaks, the repair costs can be very high. Investing in a quality instrument will keep down repair costs. Music stores always have high quality instruments available on a rent-to-own plan. This offers a return option, but also allows the monthly payments to function as credit towards purchase. Often the most inexpensive route is to purchase a used instrument from an individual. To insure quality, please check the name brand. The supply lists below have several name brands listed to give you insight. Each of those brands are recognized be professional instrument repair shops. There are other brands, so if you find a deal, feel free to email me a screenshot of the instrument you are thinking of purchasing. I will always give you an honest opinion.
Ultimately, I want to help 1) Your student to be successful. 2) You to know that your hard-earned money is spent carefully and wisely.
If I can assist in any way, please let me know.
